How to Stop On a Skateboard

So you’ve learned how to push off on a skateboard in the last post. Now, you might be wondering, “How do I stop on a skateboard?”! There are several different ways you can use to stop your skateboard.

Footbreaking – This is probably the easiest way to stop a skateboard. Place your back foot on the ground, causing friction between your foot and the surface, eventually bringing the skateboard to a complete stop. This requires a little bit of practice, so make sure you don’t rely on this when you need to, before any kind of practice.

Heel Drag – This is pretty common among all skateboarders, but it’s a little bit more complicated than Footbreaking, especially for beginner skateboarders. To use this trick, put the heel of your back foot so that it’s sticking off the back of your skateboard. Then, lean back so that the front of your skateboard comes up. To do that, step on the board, but make sure half your foot stays on the board! The friction between your heel and the ground will cause you to stop. Again, this will require a certain amount of practice. So don’t try this in situations where you actually need to stop!

Powerslide – This is pretty popular among the Tony Hawk’s video games, but it’s advanced for any beginner to even try to attempt. You might want to hold off this one for now.

Bail! – If all else fails, your last resort is to jump off the board. If you knees are bent this shouldn’t be very hard to do. Remember, buying a new skateboard is less expensive than breaking your arms or face!
