How to Edge a Skateboard Deck
While using a screwdriver (or any other piece of metal you selected) rub down on the edges of the skateboard until the sandpaper wears out and turns white. (Reference to the image on the left)
You want to rub at an angle, and apply a decent amount of pressure to ensure the grip tape is worn out and white around the edges.
Once you have worn out the edges, try holding the outside leftover edge of the grip tape and bend it up and down. Try to make that line that you just rubbed in even weaker, so that we can cut it more easily and evenly. Repeat the bending process to weaken it even more. If it doesn’t seem to weaken, rub it more with the screwdriver. (Or the metal object that you selected)
When you think it’s ready, use your sharp razor blade to cut along the edges that you just wore out. Cutting the edges long and smooth better helps prevent the choppy look. (Remember that this process is hard and not recommended to be done with a knife.)
Once you have removed the excess grip tape, you may want to rub it down with your metal object. Trim the edges until they’re the way you like them. Alternatively, you can rub your the edges of your board against the concrete. This will smooth out any uneven edges, and make the transition from the deck to the grip take look smoother.
This is the finished deck with a newly applied grip tape. If you chose to completely cover your board, that’s fine too. The most important part is you like the way it looks!
If you want to make your grip tape more stylish, you can cut the grip tape into shapes. This should only be attempted by more experienced skateboarders.
However, you can also purchase Pre-Cut grip tapes that look just as good! This is the part where you let your imagination loose.
Enjoy your newly gripped board!
