Want to build your own skateboard? Sick and tired of those Walmart and Kmart completes that keep breaking every 2 days? The answer for you is build your own skateboard that you can rely on, one with integrity and power, one that won’t crack when you attempt a trick (and fail, because your skateboard is broken).

But how do you build your own skateboard? What tools does it require to build your own skateboard? Do you need special knowledge to build your own skateboard? Well, not really. All you need is good instructions, and that’s what we’re here for.

Building your own skateboard is kind of like investing into stocks.. You never really know where to begin. But you have more of a chance to succeeding at building a skateboard, so read on! First off, you need to acquire the following material for your skateboard:

1. A board deck

2. Some grip tape

3. Trucks

4. A set of wheels

When you got all the material required, next, you’re going to apply the grip tape to the board. When that’s done, you’re going to grip your deck with the sanding-like tape. Drill a few holes, apply the trucks to the board and the wheels to the trucks and you know how to build your own skateboard!

Of course, it’s slightly more difficult that it sounds, only because the overall process takes some time. But in generality, it’s quite easy and if you put your mind to it, it’s going to be even easier.

Now get up, get yourself some tools, and start building your own skateboard from scratch! There’s nothing more fun than constructing your baby and pouring your love into it.

Almost skateboards is an American skateboard company that was founded in 2003. What sets Almost Skateboards apart from other companies is the additional features they experiment when designing and building their skateboards such as resin and epoxy and carbon fiber inserts.

Almost Skateboards is a private company that’s located in El Segundo, California. So far, only three skateboards have been released that has implementation of carbon fiber. Almost Skateboard’s Double Impact series has certainly provided stronger durability and flexibility while riding. I highly recommend trying out the flawlessness and enjoyment Almost Skateboard Double Impact series provides.

If you’re just starting, you need a beginners guide to skateboarding that will help you quickly get started with skateboarding. Beginners ask many questions such as what is the best beginners skateboard, what are the beginner skateboarding shoes, where should beginner skateboarders skate, what tricks should beginner skateboarders attempt to do, and so on.

I’m going to answer some of the most basic beginner skateboarder questions. Keep in mind that there’s a lot to skateboarding that may not be covered on this page, but you can always look around for additional helpful information that will excel your skateboarding skills.

As a beginner skateboarder, you have a choice to either buy a complete skateboard or build a skateboard from scratch. Whatever your option is (I won’t cover either one in this article), make sure you’re happy with your skateboard. Try to avoid buying crappy no brand Walmart skateboards because they tend to break quickly and you won’t enjoy riding them. Get yourself a quality brand name skateboard with some integrity as your first one.

Don’t listen to people who say you have to start off with a crappy board and advance to better boards as you advance your riding skills. Start off with a good board and you’ll learn how to skateboard a lot faster.

Obviously, you don’t want to skateboard in your dress shoes or slippers. Get yourself good skateboarding shoes as well as a helmet, kneepads, and gloves. You’re going to fall off your skateboard a lot at first, so make sure you’re prepared to take the fall. Check out more information about the beginner skateboarder’s gear.

Don’t attempt any tricks as a beginner. First off, decide if you’re going to use the regular or goofy stance. Learn how to simply ride the skateboard on different terrains and get comfortable with it. Read up more on how to skateboard for beginners for more information on how to skateboard.

Skateboarder’s aren’t born amazing at skateboarding. It’s something that’s developed through a lot of time and patience. And of course, you’ll get many broken bones before you become amazing at skateboarding. The trick is sticking with it and keep skateboarding on the daily basis. Here’s more information on how to to become amazing at skateboarding.

Don’t Get Scared! You see amazing skateboarding all the time but you never know how they accomplish that. One of the things they don’t have that you might is fear. If you’re not scared, okay, you’re on the right track. But if you’re scared to do a trick, how are you ever supposed to get better? It doesn’t matter if you get hurt while attempting a nice trick. If you fail first and second time, sure you might get hurt, but you’ll do it the third time and learn how it’s done.

Try New Stuff – Sure it’s great practicing the moves you already know, it’s good at keeping the edge, but you also need to try new stuff you haven’t attempted before. Sure, you might not always do it the first time, but the tricks is to keep learning new stuff at all times along with doing what you already know. In addition to trying to stuff, also try new locations. Don’t be only stuck at the skate parks. Try skateboarding at schools, supermarkets, and various lots and streets that have great obstacles to improve your amazing skateboarding.

Bring your board around as you never know when you’re going to see a great new spot and try it out. Have a friend film you attempt new tricks. Avoid skateboarding at private places when you know it can mean trouble. Best to stay on the good side of the authorities if you don’t want your skateboard taken away.

This may sound easy, but many people make the mistake of incorrectly standing on their skateboards. This will cause some problems in the long run, so these essential tips are a must.

Before trying anything crazy or complicated, you must get comfortable with your board. Whether you borrowed your skateboard or bought a fully built one, you will find some things that are uncomfotable. Getting adapted to your skateboard is the key, so try a variation of things such as jumping on your skateboard, balancing on the front or back wheels, or placing your feet at different positions.

Learn to get comfortable with standing on your skateboard, and adapt to its feel and board size. Play around with it and see if your skateboard may just be your next best friend.

So you’ve learned how to push off on a skateboard in the last post. Now, you might be wondering, “How do I stop on a skateboard?”! There are several different ways you can use to stop your skateboard.

Footbreaking – This is probably the easiest way to stop a skateboard. Place your back foot on the ground, causing friction between your foot and the surface, eventually bringing the skateboard to a complete stop. This requires a little bit of practice, so make sure you don’t rely on this when you need to, before any kind of practice.

Heel Drag – This is pretty common among all skateboarders, but it’s a little bit more complicated than Footbreaking, especially for beginner skateboarders. To use this trick, put the heel of your back foot so that it’s sticking off the back of your skateboard. Then, lean back so that the front of your skateboard comes up. To do that, step on the board, but make sure half your foot stays on the board! The friction between your heel and the ground will cause you to stop. Again, this will require a certain amount of practice. So don’t try this in situations where you actually need to stop!

Powerslide – This is pretty popular among the Tony Hawk’s video games, but it’s advanced for any beginner to even try to attempt. You might want to hold off this one for now.

Bail! – If all else fails, your last resort is to jump off the board. If you knees are bent this shouldn’t be very hard to do. Remember, buying a new skateboard is less expensive than breaking your arms or face!

It’s a common problem when a worn out skateboard tends to lean to one side and stay there. Many skateboarders have confirmed of such a problem, and they say that you have to “stomp on the skateboard” to get it back to the normal position. This originally occurs when you build a brand new skateboard from scratch, or had someone build the skateboard for you. There’s an easy fix for this type of problem, so don’t think your skateboard is broken. This can be caused from a few problems that I’m going to list below:

Trucks Not Parallel

This is a common problem caused by the missing balance between the trucks. In order for your skateboard to stand straight, the trucks have to be perfectly parallel to each other. This may often be a problem when you build your own skateboard from scratch, as you may have accidentally placed the trucks a little unparalleled from each other. To fix this problem, try loosening the trucks from the board, turn them to the side a little bit to match the other truck, and screw it back together.

Tightened New Board

When you first get your new board, you’re not supposed to tighten the trucks until they break in. If you did in fact tighten your trucks because you thought they were too lose, that could be the reason for this problem. I suggest that you loosen up your trucks a little bit, and ride them for a few days. Then, tighten them back and see what happens.

One of these problems should fix your truck from leaning to one side and staying there.

Maybe you haven’t thought about this before, but you need to figure out which skateboarding stance is right for you! There are 2 skateboarding stances: Regular stance, and Goofy stance. The difference is simply whether you’re right footed or left footer. To figure out which stance is best for you, simply find out which foot you’re more comfortable with being in the back. If you can’t figure it out, do the following simple tricks to find out:

The Ball Trick – Get a ball and simply kick it. If you kicked it with your right foot, you’re Regular. If you kicked it with your left food, you’re Goofy.

Staircase Trick – Come up to a staircase and walk up. Which foot did you step with first? Right foot means you’re Regular, left foot means you’re Goofy.

Push Trick – For this trick, ask someone to unexpectedly push you from behind. Hopefully, you will not end up with a nosebleed. Instead, see which foot reacted first to stop you from falling. If it was your right foot, you’re Regular. If it was your left foot, you’re Goofy.

Hopefully, by now you have found out which stance is right for you. There is no RIGHT stance, you can learn to skate Regular, Goofy, or both. The best skateboarding stance is the one that you like best.

Being able to properly push off on a skateboard is a very important part of skateboarding as a whole. For starters, you might want to try some smooth surface, such as concrete, or any other type of smooth pavement. Learning how to push your skateboard is vital because it is the essence of your speed. You might want to find a public place with not a lot of people or cars.

Front Foot Position – You might be wondering where to place your front foot on a skateboard. Most common place to place your front foot is on the front truck, or a little bit behind it, on top of the board. Make sure you don’t position it in front of a truck, or too much towards the middle.

Pushing With Back Foot – Once you placed your front foot on the skateboard, use your back foot to push the skateboard until you reach the speed you want. It’s okay to push with your front foot if you’re more comfortable that way.

Placing Your Back Foot - Once you’ve gained the speed you want, place your back foot on the tail of the skateboard. (Refer to part 4)

Regaining Speed – When you’re slowing down, simply use your back foot to push the skateboard some more until you have gained more speed. Repeat this process as many times as needed.

It’s very important that you don’t jump ahead and start doing tricks. Give yourself some time to get aquainted to pushing off on your skateboard. This is the first thing that you have to master as a skateboarder. Give yourself a good amount of time to practice.

When you’ve practiced for some time, try going downhill, and try skateboarding on different surfaces. After a while, you will get adapted to it making it almost natural. The key is consistency and practice. Don’t get demotivated when you can’t do something that you want. Just like anything else, this requires a decent amount of practicing.
